New Year, New You

In less than four weeks, we will be entering a New Year. It’s a celebrated tradition and a custom to bring good intentions, new beginnings and resolutions for positive change into the New Year. As we emerge from the last of our New Year’s celebrations with pounding heads and self loathing, many of us will be armed with a bucket list of self improvements. Whether it be to quit smoking, drinking, or to live a more healthy lifestyle, we take this opportunity to make positive changes in our lives. However, did you know that there is mounting evidence to suggest that less than 50 percent of people will have kept to their resolutions in six months?

So how can you make sure that 2020 will be any different from previous years? There is no guarantee, only your desire and commitment to see your resolutions through to completion.

Here are some tips to help you on your way:

➡️ Prepare yourself psychologically. Remember that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, commitment and patience.

➡️ Set realistic goals with measurable results. For example, deciding never to indulge in your favourite food again is setting you up to fail. Rather, strive for a more attainable goal, cutting back and taking smaller portions.

➡️ Get started immediately! Do not wait until you feel motivated or have more energy.

➡️ Set targets and reward your successes. Maybe you wish to run a 5k in three months?

➡️ Don’t get discouraged if you have a setback. Instead, use it as an advantage, learn from it and pick-up where you left off.

➡️ Why not ask a friend or loved one to join you? Tell them of your goals and they can help you stay on track.
