Are You Achieving Your Fitness Goals?

Is this a question you’ve asked yourself lately? Have you embarked on a fitness programme in the new year and frustrated because you feel you’re not achieving the results you’ve hoped for? Well, there could be many reasons for this. Are you setting realistic targets? Is your fitness programme tailored to meet your goals? Are you eating a balanced diet, paying close attention to your portion sizes that includes healthy fats, good carbs, protein and fibre? Are you drinking enough water? If your answer to any of these questions is no! then it’s time that you re-evaluate your fitness programme.

Often times when we start our fitness journey, we approach it with great enthusiasm, doing regular workouts as we begin to make healthy food choices. However, it is very important that you understand the steps it takes in order to achieve your goals and if the programme you are following is tailored to meet your needs. There is no ‘one programme fit all’. Everyone’s journey is different and what works for me, may not necessarily work for you. Allowing yourself realistic targets is important in order to manage your expectations. For example, if your goal is to lose 3 kilos in three months, then your programme should include a nutrition plan that requires you to be in a calorie deficit to achieve this. Your workouts should include a balance of cardio, resistance/strength training and you should also look at the time frame you’ve set yourself. For some, this may seem achievable, however, for others, this may take longer than anticipated depending on your BMI (body mass index). The same goes for someone whose goal is to improve strength and build muscle. Doing excessive amounts of cardio, with little to no strength/resistance training is counterproductive and will yield negative results. This is why speaking to a fitness professional who can help you to manage your goals and implement a tailored programme is advisable.

It goes without saying that physical fitness and nutrition goes hand in hand, one cannot work without the other. Understanding the types of foods and portion sizes to adhere to that compliments your physical programme is key to your progress. There are many apps that can help you to manage your foods effectively, suggesting healthy food options or alternatives to your favourite snacks.

Remember that fitness and health is a life long journey. Taking the appropriate steps that fits well within your lifestyle, that challenges you and keeps you accountable, will hopefully motivate you to achieve your goals.
