Summer is a time when most of us unwind and get away for that much needed break. We reset, restart and re-energise. Some take the opportunity to boast their weight loss success and enviable figure which they’ve worked so hard for in the past months, while basking in the hot summer sun. Sure, most people revel in the thought of escaping entirely from their regular routine. But for others, we are keen to keep it going for our own sanity. So how do you stay motivated when you are away from your daily routine, gym, personal trainer and that support system that’s kept you focused on your goals and fitness journey for so long?
Below are some tips on staying both physically and mentally fit while travelling, but not stressing about whether you have missed your training day or tempted to eat that desert, which is simply irresistible.
1. Walk – we all do this daily. But when we have more time on our hands than we can manage, this can be therapeutic. Walking for at least 20-30 minutes is great, especially if you have a scenic route. It keeps the blood flowing, gives you a bit of fresh air and can be mentally and physically relaxing. If you want to add some resistance to your walks, then strapping on an *ankle or wrist weight (image below) is your answer. It is light weight, easy to pack away in your travel bag and you get your exercise in while building on your strength. *These can be purchased from an online sports/fitness retailer.

2. Refeed – If you are going away for a minimum of 3-5 days, pick a day during your break where you just refeed. This means eating what you want. That way, you are boosting your metabolism, but not having to restrict yourself, but indulge in your favourite foods/treats.
3. *Resistance Bands – back to my point on easy packing. Resistance bands are great to travel with if you want to do a full body workout, and there is no gym in sight. It’s like a gym in a bag! There are varying strengths to resistance bands, weighing from light to heavy. You can purchase mini or loop resistance bands. Here are some examples above and below of a full body resistance band workout.

4. Meditate – as with building your physical fitness, your mental health is equally important. Take a few minutes in the day to meditate in a quiet setting. Just close your eyes, relax, listen to your breathing and take your mind away from the stresses of daily life. You will be amazed how gratifying meditation can be.
5. Drink Water – often we underestimate the importance of water to our bodies. Not only does it re-energise us, but drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day can aid in weight loss and help rid the body of toxins. Most times when we feel peckish or in need of a snack, this can be a sign of dehydration. Drinking a glass of water can help fight those hunger pains while keeping us hydrated, especially when it’s so hot!!
6. Book A Physical Activity/Adventure with Family or Friends – if you are travelling with family or friends, why not book an activity that will not only get your heart pumping, but you can share in the excitement with your travel partner/s. From cycling, ziplining, paddle boating, diving, swimming, walking, jogging or climbing, there are so many activities to keep you moving with the support you need to stay motivated. These are just a few tips on how to stay fit while on holiday. But, most importantly, enjoy yourself. It’s okay to take a break! Rest is vital in order to refresh our mental energy, rebuild and repair muscle tissue, strengthen joints and ligaments and replenish fluids and energy stores. Remember, life is all about balance.
